BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — In a season full of uncertainty for the USF women’s basketball team, one thing was certain for the Bulls on Thursday afternoon: They couldn’t put the ball in the basket.

The Bulls fell to the UTSA Roadrunners 62-51 in the quarterfinals of the American Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament behind a woeful shooting performance.

USF shot 34% from the floor, including 3-of-15 from behind the 3-point line. The Bulls’ 51 points were the fewest they scored against an American Conference opponent this season.

“I didn’t think we came out ready to play,” interim head coach Michelle Woods-Baxter said after the game. “We had a slow start, and that just caused us to never get a flow for the game, I guess.”

USF shot 3-of-12 from the floor in the first quarter. They faced an eight-point halftime deficit.

Neither team made a 3-point field goal in the first half, and the teams combined for just five 3-pointers in the game.

The Roadrunners dominated near the rim Thursday afternoon. They outscored the Bulls 38-28 in the paint and outrebounded USF 47-26\. UTSA grabbed 13 offensive rebounds and scored 14 second-chance points.

UTSA was led by its frontcourt duo. Senior forward Cheyenne Rowe scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds on her 22nd birthday. Junior forward Idara Udo added ten points and ten rebounds.

Senior forward L’or Mputu led the Bulls with 16 points and ten rebounds. Senior forward Carla Brito added 14 points. Both potentially played their final collegiate games with USF’s postseason eligibility in question.

“I will never forget this place. It’s been great to me,” Mputu said after the game.

When asked whether USF would play in any postseason games, Woods-Baxter said, “Probably not.”

The loss likely concludes what was a turmoil-filled season for the Bulls.

On Oct. 27, longtime USF coach Jose Fernandez left the school to become head coach of the WNBA’s Dallas Wings. USF appointed Woods-Baxter as interim head coach after the move. The Bulls opened the season Nov. 3, meaning Woods-Baxter had seven days to step into a position that Fernandez held for 25 years.

“They’ve been through a lot of adversity, and they handled it well,” Woods-Baxter said after the game. “I’m really proud of these young ladies for hanging in there and fighting through everything.”

Now all eyes will turn to CEO of Athletics Rob Higgins, who will determine whether the school removes the interim tag from Woods-Baxter’s title or pursues a new head coach in the offseason.

Mitchell Northam of USA Today reported that “USF is putting out some feelers to gauge interest in its head coach position for women’s basketball,” but added that the team could still retain Woods-Baxter.

While the Bulls’ season may have ended today, the storylines around the program will continue to swirl.
