TAMPA — A trio of University of South Florida pitchers heard their names called during Monday’s MLB draft, marking the program’s first selections since 2022 and the first under head coach Mitch Hannahs.

Hannahs is no stranger to sending players to the pros. With three Bulls drafted this year and 16 during his tenure at Indiana State, a total of 19 players have been selected from his programs.

Junior pitchers Corey Braun, Austin Newton and Bryce Archie were drafted.

Braun, the Bulls’ Friday night starter and ace, was the first off the board, selected in the eighth round (No. 230 overall) by the Oakland Athletics. He entered the transfer portal prior to the draft but has not committed to another school. In 2025, Braun pitched 97 innings, recording a 3.71 ERA with 97 strikeouts. He allowed three earned runs or fewer in seven of his nine regular-season conference starts, but struggled in the American Athletic Conference tournament, surrendering nine earned runs across two outings against East Carolina — the only team to beat USF in the event.

His departure leaves a major gap in USF’s rotation heading into 2026.

Reliever Austin Newton was taken by the Colorado Rockies in the 10th round (No. 287 overall). Newton missed the early part of the season due to injury and made his debut April 12\. In his final four outings, he allowed just one earned run over nine innings. Newton spent all three of his college seasons with USF. Newton could see his role increased in 2026 if he were to decide to return to the Bulls.

Two-sport standout Bryce Archie was the third Bull selected. A quarterback on the football team and a pitcher for the baseball squad, Archie was selected after finishing the 2025 season with a 3.25 ERA. He did not allow an earned run in six of his final seven appearances on the mound.

Archie also started eight games at quarterback for the Bulls last season after Byrum Brown was sidelined by injury, leading USF to a 5-3 record and a victory in the Hawai‘i Bowl. His future with the football program is uncertain. USF Baseball’s social media announced Archie’s selection with the caption, “Bryce Archie is trading his green for red,” suggesting he may pursue baseball full time.

If Archie does forgo his senior football season, freshman Locklan Hewlett is expected to be the backup quarterback. Hewlett impressed in the spring game, completing 13-of-14 passes for 110 yards and three touchdowns.

In addition to the three college draftees, two USF high school signees were selected. Catcher Diego Rosa was taken No. 440 overall by the Athletics and has confirmed he will sign professionally. Outfielder Eli Pitts, selected No. 145 overall, has not publicly announced whether he will join USF or head straight to the pros.
