The Tampa Bay Lightning are starting their first road trip of the year by heading up to Boston to take on the Bruins in a 1 p.m. puck drop on Indigenous People’s/Columbus Day.

In aviation, planes are equipped with a multitude of safety systems to assist pilots with transporting the souls on their aircraft safely to their final destination. One of those systems is the Ground Proximity Warning System. The GPWS alerts pilots to pull up their aircraft to avoid impact into terrain or some other object immediately in their path.

If the Lightning’s season were a plane, the GPWS would be absolutely screaming at this point. The Lightning are just one of six teams in the NHL without a win on the season and just one of three that have zero points. Winning in Boston—in regulation— is imperative to getting this season back on track.

Here’s the rub, though: this is going to be a very weird game. A lot of folks work this holiday. Hell, Hillsborough County has school tomorrow. A 1 p.m. puck drop, who knows how the crowd is, first road trip, and your team is reeling? This has afternoon stinker written all over it.

The Bruins are exactly opposite of the Lightning right now. They are 3-0 on the season. However, the teams they’ve beaten have been pretty toothless. A 3-1 victory over the Capitals is the best win with the other two being against the Blackhawks in OT & the Sabres in regulation (two of the other five teams without a win this season).

So, what can we expect out of Boston? A couple of things in my opinion:

- **Barring some miraculous defensive clinic, the Bruins will probably score three or more goals.** The B’s have scored, at least, three in each game. And the Lightning have given up five in both of theirs. The O/U is currently 5.5\. Too easy.
- **Expect a lot of big hits.** Jon Cooper has apparently decided the Bolts are going to lay the wood this season and have some bigger hitters on the roster. The Bruins employ Tanner Jeannot & Mikey Eyssimont. Both teams have given 70 total hits so far. I expect the same to continue tomorrow and wouldn’t be surprised if Douglas is back in, especially with Jeannot wearing the Spoked B.
- **A Boston W.** At this point, the Lightning are bad until they’re not. The defense has been abysmal. The power play is good, but has warts. The Bolts Bakery is open and turnovers are hot and fresh out of the oven—they are 12th in defensive zone giveaways to their opponent. And maybe Vasy isn’t as elite as he once was. (He’s still pretty good don’t get me wrong, but I think the mileage is starting to show).

I’d like to be more optimistic and think the Bolts get right on this game. I really would love that. I just don’t see it. Not yet.

Please Lightning, prove me wrong.

Go Bolts.
