**PLAYER:** Gaston Moore

**POSITION:** Quarterback

**YEAR:** Redshirt senior

**HEIGHT/WEIGHT:** 6’2”, 212 lbs.

**HOW DID HE GET HERE?** A fascinating road. Moore was an unrated quarterback out of Hilton Head and elected to walk on at UCF in 2020, when Josh Heupel was the head coach there and Alex Golesh was his offensive coordinator. When Heupel and Golesh went to Tennessee in 2021, Moore followed them to Knoxville. From 2021 through 2023, he was pretty low on the depth chart and was limited to mop-up duty, but he made a big leap in 2024 and spent the season as the second-string quarterback behind Nico Iamaleava.

Due to the COVID season in 2020, Moore had one extra year of eligibility, and he entered the transfer portal in the winter in search of a spot to find his final season. Fast forward to the summer: Moore still hadn’t committed to another school yet, and Alex Golesh and USF found themselves in need of another quarterback after Bryce Archie’s departure. Golesh reached out to Moore, and he committed shortly before fall camp.

Golesh’s accounting of the whole situation was great content.

> “That Friday night, when we got the final word that Bryce was gonna sign \[…\] I called Gaston and said “man, you want to do this?” … It was gonna be the only guy that I could think of in the entire country who would actually have a chance to come in and compete.”

Wonderful timing!

**HOW WAS HIS 2024 SEASON?** Moore did an admirable job of slowly climbing the depth chart over the years - going from a walk-on at UCF to a second-stringer at Tennessee is a very impressive journey. And he played serious snaps for the playoff-bound Vols in 2024 when Iamaleava was injured: he handled the entire second half of Tennessee’s win over Mississippi State, and jumped in very briefly in the Vols’ win over Bama as well. Against Mississippi State, he went 5 for 8 for 38 yards. Against Bama… well, he threw one pass, and it was an interception.

You can see some of his highlights from the season below.

Moore finished the season having completed 16 passes in 27 attempts for 201 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

**WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT IN 2025?** You couldn’t have scripted a better outcome than USF, looking to fill a scholarship quickly post-Bryce Archie, finding an experienced quarterback in the portal who already knows the system. Moore will presumably fill Archie’s role this season as the Bulls’ primary backup if anything should happen to Byrum Brown. It’s a luxury to have a veteran quarterback in the room who has high-level SEC experience. And for what it’s worth, he’s been turning some heads in fall camp.
