**PLAYER:** Chavez Brown

**POSITION:** Linebacker

**YEAR:** Senior

**HEIGHT/WEIGHT:** 6'1", 230 lbs.

**HOW DID HE GET HERE?** A fascinating background story, here. Brown played both receiver and linebacker at Terrebone High School in Houma, Louisiana, about an hour outside New Orleans. He then [committed to Division II New Mexico Highlands University](https://www.houmatoday.com/story/sports/high-school/football/2021/01/13/terrebonne-athlete-chavez-brown-has-college-sports-his-mind/6578568002/?ref=bayareaexaminer.com), but ended up enrolling at Butler Community College in Kansas. He played one season there, largely at receiver, then caught the attention of North Texas in the spring of 2023 when he started practicing at linebacker again.

His first season with the Mean Green was quiet, but he broke out in 2024 and started a good bit of the season, posting career highs in basically every statistical category. He entered the transfer portal after spring practice in April, and lined up visits with a number of solid mid-major programs.

Brown ended up committing to USF after the second of those visits.

**HOW WAS HIS 2024 SEASON?** As mentioned above, pretty impressive. Brown played in all 13 games for UNT and started six of them, and he was particularly effective as a pass rusher. He totaled 49 tackles, eight TFLs, and four sacks, and ended the season on a bit of a heater, putting up 33/4/1 in the last four games of the year.

**WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT IN 2025?** Alex Golesh and company clearly wanted to add some depth at linebacker after the spring as a way to bridge the gap between the locked-in starters in Mac Harris and Jhalyn Shuler and the young underclassmen. Bringing in a player like Brown who’s already produced at the AAC level is particularly exciting. Harris and Shuler are leading the way here, but I think Brown should still see plenty of playing time and seems like a good fit with the blitz-happy Todd Orlando.

I should also add that with the pending JUCO eligibility ruling and the ongoing whims of the Chaotic Eligibility Goblin, Brown could very well have another year at USF after this one, so a good season could put him in line to start in 2026.
