**PLAYER:** Jhalyn Shuler

**POSITION:** Linebacker

**YEAR:** Redshirt senior

**HEIGHT/WEIGHT:** 6'3", 225 lbs.

**HOW DID HE GET HERE?** Shuler went to Abbeville High School, just on the Carolina side of the Georgia/South Carolina line. He was rated a low three-star prospect by the recruiting services and had offers from UConn, Coastal Carolina, ECU, and Southern Miss. He opted to go the junior college route instead, and played two seasons at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas. There, he got rated a mid three-star prospect and had offers from USF, Texas Tech, and Texas State. Shuler chose the Bulls (not the only time USF has bested Texas Tech on the gridiron) and enrolled in the summer of 2022.

He had a quiet 2022 season, appearing in ten games and making eight tackles. But he took a huge step forward in Alex Golesh’s first season in 2023 and became one of the leaders of the defense. Shuler started all 13 games and was the Bulls’ leading tackler, finishing with 97 tackles, nine TFLs, and a pair of sacks. He was named honorable mention All-AAC for his efforts. He also made one of the plays of the year when he returned a botched extra point for a unorthodox two point conversion against Navy:

**HOW WAS HIS 2024 SEASON?** Expectations were big for Shuler going into the 2024 season and he delivered almost immediately, making an interception in the first quarter against Bethune-Cookman and nearly taking it back for a score. Unfortunately, he got injured on the play and had to miss the next three weeks. When he returned, he was as impactful as ever and started the remainder of the season. One of his biggest plays of the season came in the third quarter against UAB with the Bulls down 19-14, when he stepped in front of a pass and took it 26 yards the other way to set up a critical touchdown (4:00 in the highlight video below).

Like his fellow linebacker Mac Harris, Shuler was more than just a run stuffer - he was counted on to be one of USF’s more dynamic pass rushers, and he delivered accordingly. Against Charlotte, his hit on quarterback Deshawn Purdie surgically separated Purdie from the ball and gave Harris an easy scoop-and-score to pad the Bulls’ lead (4:01, below).

Even with the three missed games, Shuler was one of the most dangerous players on USF’s defense. He finished with 67 tackles, seven TFLs, a career-high 3.5 sacks, two interceptions and three forced fumbles.

**WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT IN 2025?** Thanks to the still-in-flux Diego Pavia JUCO ruling (and, of course, the Chaotic Eligibility Goblin), Shuler somewhat unexpectedly received another year of FBS eligibility and will be back to being a key part of the USF defense. Bulls fans should be thrilled. Defense has been hard to come by for the Bulls over the last couple seasons, but there’s no doubt that Shuler and Harris have been two of the bright spots. They’re both locked-in starters and contenders to earn all-conference honors.
