**PLAYER:** Locklan Hewlett

**POSITION:** Quarterback

**YEAR:** Freshman

**HEIGHT/WEIGHT:** 6'1", 190 lbs.

**HOW DID HE GET HERE?** Hewlett was a Wake Forest commit as far back as June 2023, before his junior season at St. Augustine High. He ended up reopening his recruitment in March of 2024, then committed to the Bulls in April. He was locked in from there, signing in December and enrolling in January.

Folks understandably get excited about the credentials of incoming quarterback recruits, and Hewlett has good ones: he was rated a mid-to-high three star prospect, and had a number of P4 offers, including Miami and Texas A&M.

**WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT IN 2025?** I don’t want to get too into the tea leaves here, but I do think it says something that before the spring, Hewlett wore the same number as the Bulls’ presumed number one receiver, Keshaun Singleton (which would have prevented them from being on the field at the same time). After a fantastic spring, Hewlett’s number changed to #13\. Hm!

About that spring: Hewlett was electric in the spring game, completing 13 of 14 passes for 110 yards and three touchdowns. In fact, he was turning heads all throughout practice and [earned some praise from Alex Golesh:](https://www.tampafp.com/usf-football-spring-wrap-byrum-browns-hamstring-locklan-hewlett-really-really-special/?ref=bayareaexaminer.com)

> “He continues to be really, really special in a lot of ways. He is a little baller, is fun to coach and we will see how his progression goes. I think he has a really bright future here.”

That hype has continued into the fall and then some. Even before Bryce Archie left the program, there were rumblings that Hewlett was challenging him for the QB2 job. Golesh has thrown more fuel on that fire in his fall pressers, mentioning that Hewlett still needed to bulk up a bit, but was already taking reps with the second-stringers at practice.

The Bulls quickly brought in Gaston Moore as Archie’s “break glass in case of emergency” replacement, but I think Hewlett is right up there with Moore on the depth chart. I suspect that the intention is for Moore to serve as Byrum Brown’s main backup, allowing Hewlett to take a redshirt year and spend some time in a college weight room. That said, I would expect to see the young freshman a few times in late-game duties this season, and perhaps much, much more in the near future.
