    PLAYER: Chase Leon

    POSITION: Punter

    YEAR: Sophomore

    HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6’5”, 210 lbs.

HOW DID HE GET HERE? Like fellow incoming punter Luke Goater, Leon is an alum of ProKick Australia. He played his first season of college football at Lamar University last season, where he was a true renaissance man - punting, handling kickoffs, and serving as the Cardinals’ holder. He entered the transfer portal after the season and signed with USF on early signing day in December.

HOW WAS HIS 2024 SEASON? Pretty good. Leon clearly has a strong leg, as he punted 44 times for the Cardinals and averaged 45.4 yards per punt, which ranked sixth (!) in FCS. If you want to be a Negative Nancy and ask me to compare that number to FBS punters, I would respond that his average would have been ninth (!) among FBS punters, right behind USF’s own Andrew Stokes. If you want to be a SUPER Negative Nancy and ask me how his net punting average stacks up …. well, OK. You got me there. His net average was 37.4 yards, which would rank considerably lower. My cover is blown.

At any rate, it was a solid year at Lamar for Leon in his first season playing college ball. He handled kickoffs as well, and his numbers there were quite good - comparable to USF’s incoming kickoff specialist Adam Zouagui last season at Davidson. It’s good to have options there.

WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT IN 2025? Leon will be competing with Luke Goater this offseason for the opportunity to replace Andrew Stokes. You’d think that Leon’s experience at Lamar would give him the leg (heh) up, but we’ll see how things unfold.
