**PLAYER:** Luke Goater

**POSITION:** Punter

**YEAR:** Freshman

**HEIGHT/WEIGHT:** 6’2”, 195 lbs.

**HOW DID HE GET HERE?** Continuing the pipeline of Aussie punters after Andrew Stokes’ excellent four years at USF, Goater hails from Melbourne, Australia and is a product of ProKick Australia, a program that trains Australian athletes in hopes of placing them in the American football ranks. Goater committed to USF in November of 2024 and signed the next month. He enrolled early and took some kicks in the spring game in April.

Fun fact: Goater, as with many ProKick Australia alumni, was formerly an Aussie rules football player. Over the last few years, the 24-year-old Goater played in a number of lower-tier leagues, including a recent stint in 2023 for the Footscray Bulldogs, the reserve team for first-tier club Western Bulldogs. You can see plenty of [highlights](https://x.com/VFL/status/1700359675630256358?ref=bayareaexaminer.com) of Goater in action if you wish. I really recommend it, especially if you haven’t watched much Aussie rules football before. I went down an AFL rabbit hole a few years ago, and the sport is just absolutely electric. I expect USF to start a team soon.

**WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT IN 2025?** USF will need a new punter after Stokes graduated. He did so after a brilliant senior season that saw him earn first team All-AAC honors and nearly singlehandedly win the Hawaii Bowl with a 72-yard punt in the fourth quarter that I still think about regularly, so there are some big shoes to fill here.

Goater will be competing with fellow ProKick Australia alum Chase Leon, who transferred in this offseason from Lamar University, to be next in line. You’d think Leon has an edge due to his season of experience in college ball, but there’s still plenty of offseason left.
