*When we’ve finished profiling an entire unit, we’ll run through a final breakdown of that position group at large. We’ll touch on a quick overview of the group, then I’ll break it down by tiers as far as how I see playing time shaking out. Finally, I’ll pose one Big Question that I have about the unit approaching the season, and my general level of confidence.*

### The Overview:

*Note: from left to right, the columns are player number, player name, eligibility, On3 consensus recruit rating out of high school (asterisk if the player transferred to USF), offensive FBS snaps in 2024, career FBS games (with 2024 games in parentheses), career FBS starts (with 2024 starts in parentheses), receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns in 2024, and the school they played at in 2024, if different from USF.*

For the third straight season under Alex Golesh, USF is bringing in a transfer tight end to presumably lead the line for them. In 2023 it was Weston Wolff, who started that season and then missed most of 2024 with injuries. Last season the Bulls brought in Payten Singletary from Cincinnati, who performed admirably. This season, Singletary and longtime member of the TE corps Gunnar Greenwald depart, so Golesh brought in Wyatt Sullivan, who started last season at FAU. He joins a crowded room that includes Wolff, former blue-chipper Jonathan Echols, and blocking specialist Evan Dangler. There are theoretically a ton of options here, which is not a bad problem to have.

### The Prospectus:

**Tier 1:** [**Wyatt Sullivan**](https://thebayareaexaminer.substack.com/p/stampeding-through-the-2025-usf-football-f87) **and** [**Weston Wolff**](https://thebayareaexaminer.substack.com/p/stampeding-through-the-2025-usf-football-01e)

Based on reports from fall camp, I would’ve given Sullivan the edge if I had to guess at a day-one starter. That said, Wolff is the first name listed on the depth chart, though they are joined by the infamous “OR”. My main takeaway is that it’s good to know Wolff is healthy!

The coaches seem to be really excited about Sullivan’s receiving chops and athleticism, and I suspect he’ll be the first player called upon in this unit when USF is in passing mode. But Wolff, who has two years’ experience in this offense and was the unquestioned starter in 2023, should be playing quite a bit as well, and will perhaps feature more as a blocker.

**Tier 2:** [**Evan Dangler**](https://thebayareaexaminer.substack.com/p/stampeding-through-the-2025-usf-football-0c3)

Dangler gets his own tier! He’s basically the closest thing on USF’s roster to a fullback, as he comes in a lot to run block and takes a bunch of his snaps from the backfield. The Bulls’ coaching staff frequently stresses the importance of blocking from their tight ends, so they adore Dangler. He’s basically guaranteed a good amount of playing time this season on his blocking chops alone, even if he isn’t a target in the receiving game.

**Tier 3:** [**Jonathan Echols**](https://thebayareaexaminer.substack.com/p/stampeding-through-the-2025-usf-football-57b)

I suspect this placement may be contentious, if the reaction to Echols’ omission from the preseason depth chart is anything to go by. Echols is a tremendous athlete who transitioned from defensive end late in his high school career and spent his freshman year putting on weight and dealing with some injuries. I’m sure USF fans are chomping at the bit to see the former blue-chipper in action, especially after his one catch in 2024 was a 59-yard touchdown. The coaching staff will talk him up every chance they get, but they’re still talking about his potential and athleticism - not discussing him as an immediate threat for playing time. I’m very excited to see him play (as is everyone in the Bay Area Examiner’s mentions). It just may not happen much in 2025.

**Tier 4:** [**Tayte Crable** ](https://thebayareaexaminer.substack.com/p/stampeding-through-the-2025-usf-football-f17)**and** [**Brandon Kubay**](https://thebayareaexaminer.substack.com/p/stampeding-through-the-2025-usf-football-f3d)

Crable and Kubay are the two incoming freshmen in the unit. They both enrolled in January and were on campus for spring practice, but I don’t see them getting into the mix this season.

### The Big Question: Is this the year the tight ends get involved?

Here’s an interesting factoid on Alex Golesh’s tight end usage: he’s been using them a lot less at USF than he did when he was the offensive coordinator at Tennessee. Below, you can see receptions, yards and touchdowns for tight ends in Golesh’s offenses the last four seasons, along with the percentage of the team’s total receptions and yards that tight ends received.

It’s been slim pickings at USF! Last year’s numbers are also quite inflated by the late-game 59-yard touchdown to Echols when the game was well in hand. For whatever reason, Golesh has just not trusted his tight ends in the passing game yet.

Will that change this season? Does it need to? USF’s offense has shown that it’s perfectly capable of operating at a high level without a top-tier receiving tight end. The addition of Wyatt Sullivan could change things; Sullivan is a converted receiver capable of splitting out wide and making tough catches. Combine his receiving skills with Weston Wolff and Evan Dangler’s blocking chops, and you could have a nice little room here - but I’m not sure there’s a player in the bunch who possesses all of USF’s desired qualities. Nonetheless, I’m pleased with this group and am excited to see Echols’ continued progression. I candidly don’t think that tight ends will have a huge bearing on USF’s success or lack thereof this season, but I’ll predict a slight uptick in usage in Golesh’s third year.
