Star USF quarterback Byrum Brown has decided to enter the transfer portal, ending his career with the Bulls.

“Because I truly believe in the direction that USF is headed, this decision weighed heavily on me, and after much prayer and reflection, I ultimately made the difficult decision to enter the transfer portal,” Brown said in a statement released Monday.

Brown will enter the portal with one year of eligibility remaining. He also departs USF as one of the most accomplished players in program history.

Brown spent four seasons with the Bulls after being recruited by former coach Jeff Scott and his staff. He emerged as one of the few bright spots during USF’s 2022 campaign, starting the final two games and dazzling while totaling 380 passing yards, 185 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.

Brown chose to remain with the program when Alex Golesh was hired as head coach following the 2022 season.

The 2023 season marked Brown’s breakout. He became the first player in school history to throw for 3,000 yards in a single season and set single-season school records for passing touchdowns, completion percentage, completions and quarterback rushing attempts.

Brown was instrumental in USF’s turnaround from a 1-11 season in 2022 to a 7-6 finish in 2023\. The Bulls capped the year with a 45-0 rout of Syracuse in the Boca Raton Bowl, earning their first bowl victory in six years. Brown was named the game’s offensive MVP after accounting for 407 total yards and three touchdowns.

The 2024 season proved more turbulent. Brown added approximately 20 pounds in the offseason to better withstand his rushing workload, but his passing production dipped early, with his average falling from 253.2 yards per game to 139.3\. The biggest setback came in September during a blowout loss to Tulane, when Brown suffered a leg injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the regular season, despite Golesh labeling him “day-to-day.” Brown returned for a few plays in the Bulls’ Hawaii Bowl victory over San Jose State.

Brown’s 2025 campaign marked a triumphant rise to national prominence. He helped lead USF to back-to-back wins over ranked opponents for the first time in program history, powering the Bulls to their first appearance in the AP Top 25 since 2018.

Brown continued his explosive play in American Conference action, recording more than 300 total yards and three touchdowns in every conference game. He led the FBS in total yards and total touchdowns during the regular season and became just the 13th quarterback in FBS history to post 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in a single season.

In his final game as a Bull, Brown threw for 275 yards, rushed for 104 and accounted for five total touchdowns in a 52-3 win over Rice. He was pulled in the fourth quarter to a standing ovation at Raymond James Stadium, forming a heart with his hands toward the crowd as he jogged off the field for the final time.

Brown leaves USF ranked among the top five all-time leaders in passing yards, passing touchdowns, rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.

“In short, no matter where his decision-making process takes him, we will be rooting for Byrum and he will forever be a USF Bull,” USF CEO of Athletics Rob Higgins said on X on Monday.

USF doesn’t have a scholarship quarterback with a collegiate start under their belt on the roster heading into next season. New coach Brian Hartline is expected to turn to the transfer portal to rebuild the position group.

The portal opens Jan. 2\. Until then, questions surrounding Brown’s next destination and USF’s future at quarterback remain unanswered.
