USF is now 5-1 on the road in league play. The win kept the Bulls in first place in the American Conference standings.

The Bulls rode a dominant second half to the win, outscoring the Shockers by 15 after trailing 33-26 at halftime.

The biggest difference between the halves? USF protected the basketball coming out of the locker room. The Bulls committed 12 of their season-high 18 turnovers in the first half. USF scored 40 points in the second half and outrebounded the Shockers by 12 in the final 20 minutes.

Senior guard Wes Enis led the Bulls with 16 points and 11 rebounds, recording the first double-double of his collegiate career.

Senior forward Izaiyah Nelson stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points, nine rebounds, seven steals and two blocks. His seven steals are the most in a single game by a Bull since 2019.

USF’s defense was stifling. The Bulls held the Shockers to a season-low 58 points. Wichita State shot 32% from the floor and 21% from 3-point range.

Senior Wichita State guard Kenyon Giles had a game-high 24 points. Giles, junior center Will Berg, sophomore forward Dylan Battie and senior guard Michael Gray Jr. combined for 55 of Wichita State’s 58 points.

The 66 points tie a season low for the Bulls. They also scored 66 in a loss to VCU on Nov. 26.

The win marks the third time this season USF has had a three-game winning streak. The Bulls had yet to win four in a row.

### USF wins thriller in Boca Raton to take commanding first-place lead

USF’s Achilles’ heel this season has been closing out tight games. But maybe that storyline is in the past for these relentless Bulls.

The South Florida Bulls outlasted the Florida Atlantic Owls 83-81 in overtime Sunday afternoon.

USF entered the game 0-3 in league play in one-possession games, with two of those losses coming in overtime. On Sunday, the Bulls may have gotten the anti-clutch monkey off their backs.

With 24 seconds left and the score tied at 81, USF sophomore guard C.J. Brown drove to the rim and drew a foul. Brown sank both free throws with seven seconds remaining, which proved to be the difference. He scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half and overtime, including six of USF’s final eight points in the extra frame.

The win improved the Bulls to 10-3 in league play, opening a two-game lead in the American Conference standings.

Sunday’s game was a back-and-forth affair, featuring 18 ties and 17 lead changes. The Bulls trailed 38-36 at halftime. For the second time this season against FAU, the Bulls turned a halftime deficit into a second-half comeback.

The Bulls were led by Enis, who had a game-high 27 points. It marked the eighth time this season Enis has surpassed 20 points, the most on the team.
*\*editors note, Enis was named The American Conference Player of the Week for his efforts against Wichita State and FAU*

Senior guard Devin Vanterpool led the Owls with 26 points. Freshman forward Devin Williams filled the stat sheet with a career-high 15 points, seven rebounds, five blocks and two steals.

FAU had eight blocks. The Owls entered the game first in the American Conference in blocks per game and tied for seventh nationally. The Bulls shot 43% on 2-point attempts.

USF knocked down 10 3-pointers and shot 42% from beyond the arc. Enis made five 3s and senior guard Joseph Pinion added four. It marked just the fourth time this season USF has shot better than 40% from 3-point range in a game.

The win is USF’s fourth in a row, a season-high winning streak for the Bulls. USF is now 6-1 in road games during league play, with wins over Tulsa, Wichita State and FAU away from home.

Entering the week, Wichita State and FAU were a combined 18-5 at home. The Bulls beat them in back-to-back road games in a five-day span.

USF takes a commanding first-place lead into its showdown with American Conference preseason favorite Memphis on Thursday at the Yuengling Center.

### Checking in around the American

This past week brought a wave of upsets in the American Conference.

Tulsa entered the week tied for first in the conference, but back-to-back losses have taken the wind out of its sails. The Golden Hurricane suffered a stunning home loss to UAB on Wednesday as 10.5-point favorites. The Blazers buried nine 3-pointers and held Tulsa to 27% shooting from beyond the arc. Then on Saturday, Tulsa fell to Wichita State on the road, 81-77.

North Texas pulled off back-to-back upset wins over Memphis and Temple. The Mean Green boast the American’s best defense, holding opponents to 66.2 points per game.

Temple, meanwhile, suffered consecutive home losses to Tulane and North Texas, dropping to third place in the conference standings.

However, the unequivocal biggest story of this week in the league is UTSA doing the impossible! The Roadrunners beat Charlotte on the road Sunday to secure their first league win. The win improved their record against conference foes to 1-12

While the Bulls have a two-game cushion atop the league, the standings are crowded beneath them. Second place and eighth place are separated by just a game and a half.

The road to Birmingham will be a wild one.
